Of all the tasks involved with being a Propaganda Creationist (copywriter) writing catalog copy is the absolute worst. It’s the worst of the worst. Basically you get 25, 50, and 100 words to sell your product. They use these words whenever they put your product in a catalog.

As anyone who has spent more than 30 seconds on iwilldare.com can attest, succinctness is not my strong suit. So having 25 words to say something is nearly impossible for me. I’m not even one of those people that will say things like, “I’ve got two words for you: Fuck off.” I don’t have two words for anyone, I have about 222 words for everyone.

Writing catalog copy makes me fidget, sigh a lot and listen to “Someone to Pull the Trigger” over and over again. That song makes me happy in ways that I cannot explain in 25, 50 or 100 words.

So now I’m bored and frustrated and considering taking up drinking at work. Because maybe if I were drunk, it’d be easier to write these twenty-fucking-five words. Seriously, I just spent two hours writing and re-writing 25 words. About 45 minutes of that was trying to whittle the 40 words down to a nice respectable 34. Yes, I’m a dirty cheater and I’m not ashamed to admit it.

in the bat cave

the fluorescent lights above my cell here at Hell, Inc. have all burnt out. it’s a little like working in a bat cave. i get some light from the nearby windows, but it’s decidedly dark. i can’t decide if i love or hate it. i should probably be cooking up secret plots to take over the corporate world here in my hovel, or protecting my red swingline stapler with my life. instead, i keep thumbing through Kathleen Turner Overdrive’s 6304 songs trying to find one that doesn’t annoy the piss out of me. after shuffling through 449 songs i landed on the Bangle’s Eternal Flame and that seems to be surprisingly unannoying.

a love note to my co-workers

we’ve had some pretty intense meetings at Hell, Inc. this week. it’s our busy season and it’s to be expected. for the most part the meetings are really productive (which anyone corporate drone knows is kind of rare for a meeting). we’ve had part of the canuck-contingent in town for the meetings and they’re amazed by how fun our office is and how well we all get along.

so anyway it’s after 5 yesterday and we’re still knee deep in an intense meeting, when one of our non-meeting attending co-workers busts into the room.

“i know you’re really busy,” she said. “but you really have to come outside and look at this rainbow.”

and then everyone in the meeting looked at each other, dropped their pens on the table, and ran out to see the rainbow. the canucks were amazed that not only did she come to tell us about this rainbow, but that we all went out to look at it when we were supposed to be working.

we’re so dorky like that.

working conditions

i am wearing three shirts, fingerless gloves, and a scarf, and yet i’m covered in goosebumps. it’s roughly 439 degrees below zero here in minnesota. i think it’s mother nature’s way of extracting pay for not snowing yesterday (thank you mother nature you made last night’s class that much better by not making me worry about snow).

if things don’t warm up in here soon, i’m gonna start burning my notebooks in some sort of protest against inhuman working conditions. this is absolutely ridiculous. they can’t expect me to be able to write when i’m too busy using all my energy shivering in a pathetic attempt to keep myself somewhat warm, right?
