the oppression of not being able to run with scissors

last night while sister #3 was sleeping off her worry, the rest of the sisterclub decided it would be a good idea to do our worrying together. we gathered at sister #2’s new place and commenced the worrying. in between the worrying and the pizza burgers and the big brother, i got a chance to quiz jaycie and max about the first day of school and what it’s like at the new school and such.

“today we went over all the rules,” jaycie said. “home rules and school rules and the other kinds of rules.”
“so what are some of the rules?” i asked.
“well we can’t run with scissors, we can’t run with paper, and we can’t run with our pencils up,” she said.
“sounds kind of oppressive,” i said.
“it is kinda oppressive,” she said.
“STOP,” sister #2 shouted.
“what?” jaycie and i asked.
“don’t tell her stuff like the rules at school are oppressive.”
“why?” i asked.
“because they copy every single word you say and the last thing i need is for the principal calling to tell my that jaycie and max think they’re oppressed by the rules.”

sheesh, she’s a little uptight. i mean come on, how funny would it be if a six-year-old thought she was being oppressed at school?

I’ve seen a book called Machiavelli for children. I wonder if a copy of “My First Marx” exists for you to pass them on the sly…

That, or the Little Golden Book edition of Mao’s Little Red Book.

    That would be awesome.

What on earth is the deal with no running with paper? I mean, I can understand a blanket “no running in the classroom” rule, but why break out “with paper” as though paper is now dangerous and can put your eye out the way a pencil or scissors can?
