I heard “Alex Chilton” when I was 19 (when it was getting some airplay on the radio) and despite having heard Big Star songs I didn’t have any idea who the eponymous figure was. I don’t recall exactly when I put it together (probably years later) but I take some comfort (or at least feel like less of a dumbass) from the belief many of the DJs who spun it at the time didn’t know either.

But about the last in general: Songs with shout-outs to the drummer are always better.

Pleased to see the lesser known ‘Nowhere Is My Home’ made your list. Along with ‘Don’t Get/You’re Getting Married,’ my favorite discoveries of the lawless downloading days of early aughts … If they play that tomorrow night, I’d probably shat in me pants …

I downloaded a copy of “If Only You Were Lonely” off one of those file-sharing networks about a dozen years ago. I never could get that stupid thing to play all the way through. Most of the time iTunes would skip right over it. Finding a quality, complete version of the song was one of my goals back then. I think it eventually got reissued as a bonus track, but I’d given up already.

“Color Me Impressed” is probably my favorite Replacements song, but I also enjoy that “Heartbeat-It’s a Lovebeat” cover they did. The Replacements doing bubble gum is pretty good.

The only other thing I have to say about the Replacements is that I found a used copy of that EP they put out last year. $4. It was on red vinyl and still had its unused download code with it. I didn’t think I’d like it, but I did.
