Thanks for the context, Will. I appreciate it. In a feistier mood, I would tie Bob's dress wearing to the lyrics of "Androgynous" and try to create some sort of argument from that.

I'm sick of the sanctification of Saint Kurt too, and I haven't read the Cross book, but I disagree with you about a couple of points. First, perhaps we outgrew Kurt only because he didn't give himself a chance to grow up along with us. Second, I believe it was a very different thing for Kurt to wear a dress when he did than it was for Bob Stinson to wear a dress when he did. Kurt routinely talked about his respect for women and his opposition to sexism and homophobia. That viewpoint showed up in the lyrics very often. Nirvana put on a benefit show for Bosnian rape victims during the Bosnia-Serbia war. It's not a stretch to say that there was a strong political context when he went on "Headbanger's Ball" wearing a dress. No disrespect to Bob Stinson, but when he wore a dress onstage, there wasn't the same context. He was just showing that he was wild and crazy.

You'n'me both, sister. Meh. Cobain. Flannel shirts, ripped jeans, and chuck taylors were as much a uniform of the seventies as the 90's. I know. I was there. I never got the whole Nirvana thing (having been more into Soundgarden). I remember when i first heard of Nirvana i was greatly annoyed that they dared to call themselves "nirvana" and then when the little shit went and blew his own brains out it was even more insulting to the concept. Maybe if he'd been murdered, like John Lennon. Or maybe if he'd lived so hard he died, like Keith Moon, Hendrix, or Bonzo of the Zep. Or maybe if he'd stayed alive he'd've turned into a Ted Nugent by now. ;o) Now Dave Grohl. THAT'S a guy i can appreciate.
