Indeed. But I’m still not sure Beyonce having an archery showdown with Pink would be watchable. I’m cringing even typing that. Maybe if their babies were strapped to their backs — that might be something …. Also, I guess it wouldn’t be novel today — we’ve had “A very Gaga Thanksgiving” and heard all about Xtina’s child rearing vis-a-vis “The Voice.” Maybe there was just something really special about the 1970s, besides the swimwear.

But the things is, if they did it today it would be washed-up, used-to-be stars or one-hit wonders ala Dancing With the Stars (which I have never seen, but know of because, well, I breathe and read the Internet). But these were popular bands at that time and that would never, ever happen today.

What’s really weird, and kind of makes me feel like I am becoming hopelessly old or something, is that someone totally might do a show like this with current stars, and that would be too awful to contemplate, and completely typical of our sellout media culture, et cetera, et cetera. But the vintage-era stars in vintage programming … well that’s a horse of a different color.
