Townes van Zandt recorded a better version of the song. Any time a cover is better than the original, that invalidates the original from appearing on any ten-best list.

Even though logically I understand Ruby Tuesday is a Stones song, I always think of the Rod Stewart version when I think of the song, which is a shame because the Stones’ version is better.

Sweet Virginia and Shattered had to arm wrestle for the spot on the Top 10, and the rhyming won.
