I read the book earlier this year while coughing and sneezing my way through the worst cold of my life, and while I found it compelling and well-written, after a while I kind of wanted to insert myself into the story somehow, grab Paul and the rest of the gang by their ears, and scream, “ENOUGH! GROW UP!”

As an angry, confused teenager listening to “Answering Machine” with tears swimming in my eyes, I used to wonder how on earth this band wasn’t huge. Now I know. So much unnecessary self-sabotage. I feel for the people who tried to help them only to get a face-full of shit for their trouble. I’m a musician, and as anti-establishment as anyone, and even I would have at least had a conversation and considered taking someone else’s advice if I had the passionate, connected fans this band did. I don’t want to say they didn’t deserve those allies, but holy crap…talk about shooting yourself in the foot, and the face, and the chest, and then doubling back to hit any vital spots you might have missed.
