On a base level, I enjoyed the novel. It kept me entertained, for the most part. I found his description of pre Cold War America believable. The characters and environment had dimension. Overall, it's not King's finest effort, but it's not his worst, either.

I don't know, but if all his novels suffer from the bloat of 11/22/63 I can see why his stories would have more impact. I bet in concentrated form he's pretty wonderful.

This was a bookclub read and it split down the line with the haters vs enjoyers. While I've read nearly all of Vonnegut one of my favorite time travel books is The Time Traveller's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. It's excellent.

I've been rereading a lot of King (stuff I originally read 20 or so years ago) and i, just as jake discovers, realize that while it's possible to go back you mostly shouldn't - for some reason the long stories i held so dear i've found i no longer care about (although i DO still find myself caring for some of the characters).

the things that have held up best over the decades for me king-wise are the short stories. they still get me in a way that his novels no longer can - i wonder why that is?

Doh! I kind of liked it. Okay, admittedly in that not-too-serious, fluff-novel way, but maybe I just like time travel stories, and King's occassionally poetic passages.

Anyway, I bet Spielberg's already optioned this. Or maybe Zemekis. Or would it be too close to his earlier work, Marty?

Anyway, a much better human drama time travel book is Replay, by Ken Grimwood (1987). Otherwise, the Master, Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse Five. Just watched the awesome (I think, anyway) movie adaption from 1972 by George Roy Hill (The Sting director).

Your obsevations and reviews are always interesting and often hilarious. Can't wait to read your book!

Thanks, Jodi!
