Ode to Dawson’s Cryface

You can have your National Geographic girl with the mesmerizing eyes. That raising of the flag on Iwo Jima. You can even have that one from Tiananmen Square of the protester standing up to the line of tanks. I don’t care.

You can have your images from Mars Curiosity, the sailor kissing the nurse, Marilyn and her skirt, even Johnny Cash and his finger. Whatever. You can have them all. All I want is Dawson Leery’s cryface.

I love Dawson’s Cryface. It makes me laugh every single time I see it. All of the times. It has yet to fail me. And in a world where disappointment abounds, that’s a pretty damn good track record.

My reasons for loving Dawson’s Cryface are many. First, it reminds me of one of my all-time favorite shows. Obviously. But more than that it reminds me of my favorite moments of my favorite show, when Joey chooses Pacey.

Second, it reminds me of my friend Christa.

Third, it’s just fucking hilarious. You don’t even need to have ever seen the show to see how overwrought and ridiculous the face is. It’s the very definition of melodrama with expressive eyebrows. What is not to love.

Fourth, in the age of the Internet Meme I think Dawson’s Cryface has come to represent those things that crush us that really have no impact on our lives in the grand scheme of things. Life, for instance, the fact that Scott Baio is a jerky Republican.

Finally, now that I combined my favorite photo meme with my niece Jaycie’s favorite photo meme, Dawson’s Cryface will remind me of her and that one day in the summer of 2012 when she interned for MN Reads and how we ate sandwiches and Cheetos for lunch and then laughed our heads off as I made the photo you see above.

Christa thinks I should get a tattoo of Dawson’s Cryface, but that doesn’t seem like a fitting tribute. The proper tribute would involve airbrushing it on the hood of my truck, and I’m totally gonna do it as soon as I strike it rich.

I have no chance of reading anything tonight that will make me happier than what you just wrote, so I’m going to bed.

    Long live the Dawson Cryface.

I’m going to start a Kickstarter fund for the airbrushing. And thank you for bringing the cry face to my life.
