Yeah, the first books really have a different tone than the rest..

Maybe you should try Fables and Reflections, the 6th book. It's actually a compilation of several short stories and you don't need to read the others first to understand it. I think it is one of the best volumes of the series (along with Brief Lives (7th) and The Wake (10th) - both of which rely a lot in continuity) and it captures most of what Sandman is about. If you don't like it, Sandman is really not for you (Morpheus himself does not appear often in this volume and most of the stories are about people telling their dreams), but I think you should give it a go.

If memory serves...A Doll's House involves torture of children, a serial killer's convention and a person who is really a place...A Game of You includes a plot to destroy everything, Barbie and Ken, a hero(ine) of cross-gender, and a kick-ass witch named Thessily, who still rates as the only two-dimensional character I'd consider sleeping with. It doesn't matter. You'll probably hate them all. Quit while you're ahead. No Neil for you.

Jason's right. You should have skipped this one and started at the Doll House...heck you should have started at A Game of You like I did. It's not like Neil has a chronological sense of time or a consistent style. That's why he's fun. Some of it is frakkin' brilliant, some of it just plain sucks (for me, that would be this one and American Gods). But the man can tell a story. And once we introduce Delirium...
