Maybe you should try Fables and Reflections, the 6th book. It’s actually a compilation of several short stories and you don’t need to read the others first to understand it. I think it is one of the best volumes of the series (along with Brief Lives (7th) and The Wake (10th) – both of which rely a lot in continuity) and it captures most of what Sandman is about. If you don’t like it, Sandman is really not for you (Morpheus himself does not appear often in this volume and most of the stories are about people telling their dreams), but I think you should give it a go.

It doesn’t matter. You’ll probably hate them all. Quit while you’re ahead. No Neil for you.
