I had actually picked out a relatively inexpensive tourmaline ring for my wife until my mom offered her engagement ring (my dad passed away years ago).

I agree wholeheartedly about diamonds, their marketing and the ridiculous expense (and don’t get me started about big weddings).

I’ve recently had that debate with Significant Other. What we decided is that because I am slightly traditional, I will get a ring. That ring will cost about $200, be made of titanium, and have a star sapphire for sentimental reasons.

Then he’s going to buy me a great big honking camera lens and we’re both going on a honeymoon to europe rather than a large wedding.

What really irks me about the gold-and-diamond crowd is why spend that much on something so easily lost one way or another? I’m the first to admit I’m absentminded, I’d hate to have to keep track of anything worth more than that.

The diamond industry has spent a lot of money brainwashing everyone into thinking they need to buy diamonds. They need to pay for those ads somehow.

But really, Jodi, your bitterness suggests that you think that if all that money wasn’t being spent on diamonds that it would be put to good use. Or given to you.

Otherwise, I think a deep breath may be to your benefit. Really–it’s not worth it.
