Wow, it’s true. No studded tires in a place that’s perpetually coated in ice:

Minnesota: not permitted except for nonresidents, who are subject to certain restrictions. Full-time non-resident students and nonresidents employed within Minnesota are not permitted use of studded tires regardless of vehicle registry. Rural mail carriers may use studded tires under certain conditions.

How bizarre.

Sounds like Supergenius HQ needs a helicopter pad instead, or maybe a Snow Cat.

Short of getting snow tires, you could get a set of tire chains relatively cheaply. There’s a few sets on CL right now – http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/pts/965324536.html

Get some sand/salt/fireplace ash on your driveway ASAP… if there’s any sun tomorrow it’ll help melt the ice.

I’ve heard the Blizzack WS-60’s and REVO 1’s are decent winter snow/ice tires. I’m using a set of WS-50’s and they aren’t so hot on ice, but do great on packed snow.

Oh, and studded tires aren’t legal in MN. Just talked to a cashier at Harbor Freight that had to go to court after getting caught running studs on his car.

If you’ve got a bag of rock salt for your water softener in the basement, start dumping it on the street…or at least that’s what I’d do. Don’t feel too bad: I’m stuck parking on the side of the road a.k.a. the place where the plows push all of the snow. I feel your pain.
