Hmm, isn't "third person omniscient," like, the most common narrator in all of fiction?
I don't care who the narrator is. Why would I? It didn't seem out of the ordinary in the slightest. It's God or something. That's fine with me. That's how you write a novel.

I find this review misleading. This is the kind of opinion someone might form prior to reading the novel, if they had some sort of preconceived notion about why Klosterman might or ought to fail. I had those notions myself when I started the book, but for me he obliterated those ideas by deftly handling the idea of small-town life simply being a series of unimportant events over the course of a year. That alone is good enough for a plot, and I think any attempt to seek something else out of the plot is unnecessary.

I agree that his narration style is distinctly Klosterman, but it was only distracting once in awhile, hardly enough to mar my opinion of the book entirely. Your comment that pop culture references were a "mile a minute" is an over-exaggeration to say the least. Further, I don't agree with your assertion that ALL good books with an omniscient narrator ought to go to great lengths to explain precisely who is narrating. I think that would have been superfluous in this case.

I am not disagreeing with your reasons for disliking the book, just with the excessive use of hyperbole in your overly disparaging review. If this is really the worst book you'll ever read, you're quite lucky.

Perhaps there will be enough remaindered copies of Downtown Owl so that it can pave a road.

And really, aren't we all just a bit peeved because on some level we're envious of Chuck for getting someone to publish his crappy fiction when we can't get someone to publish our crappy fiction?

Maybe it's just me.
