I'm with ya on the losing memories thing, I'm notoriously bad with remembering names. Maybe if I was a journaler (?) my memory wouldn't be so spotty.

And I'm a strong proponent of Jodi's writing about stuff while the iron is hot. For me, reflection and the passing of time polarizes events. The good and bad times take on legendary qualities and I think I forget the little things.

One of the things I love about you, Jodi, and iwilldare is that you have the talent to both experience and report at the same time. I definitely consider reading your blog after a Grumpy's outing to be "part of the event."
I've seen those parents you speak of, Wolfdo-doubleg, and I feel sad for them. But, as a person who tends to lose memory, I rely on photographs to put me right back in that amazing place and remember the details I might otherwise forget. That being said....there are some memories that are so good that photos aren't needed. For instance, I don't get those folks who videotape childbirth. Being with my bff Jessie though the experience was incredible and I will remember it for the rest of my life---sans photos.

UH makes a good point. I believe there is definitely a balance.

I've witnessed many a school event where parents spend the whole time fiddling with their digital videocams and have to watch the tape later because they basically missed the whole thing.

I love taking pictures, but I understand I can't capture everything.

I'd like to draw a bit of a comparison, if I may, to the revelation I experienced about myself this weekend while I too was camping (albeit with no hippies nearby).

I took my digital camera with me, and tons of batteries, and I didn't take a single photograph. I considered taking one after we had arrived and set up camp, just to show how pretty the camp was, but then I had the aforementioned revelation, which is this: Documenting a vacation is nowhere near as satisfying as simply experiencing it.

I note this merely as a contrasting point of view, and not to make any claim that it is more correct than yours.

You must be a total extrovert. I can't write anything down until I've had time to reflect on it. Heck, I'm still reflecting on London (march 2002) -- I can't finish that particular scrapbook because I'm not done deciphering the meaning of that trip.
