My grandma had congential heart disease. It was diagnosed in the late 1960s. although she was in and out of the hospital quite a few times, she lived until 1990-age of 88. She didn’t go into a nursing home until the age of 86. Prior to that she traveled abroad at least every two years-Europe, Mexico, etc. She had a full life. Plus, I’m sure there have been significant advances in care in the last two decades.

In mom’s case, they put in a pacemaker and put her on a whack of meds, mostly related to blood pressure and vaso-dialators. Hardly the end of the world, and she’s turning into a fantastically feisty lady again.
