So glad to hear good news for your family. My grandma had congential heart disease. It was diagnosed in the late 1960s. although she was in and out of the hospital quite a few times, she lived until 1990-age of 88. She didn't go into a nursing home until the age of 86. Prior to that she traveled abroad at least every two years-Europe, Mexico, etc. She had a full life. Plus, I'm sure there have been significant advances in care in the last two decades.

As long as they catch CHF early, anymore, it's pretty easy to fix - my mom has gone into it some stupidly large number of times by now (twelve? something like that.), and they just keep yanking her back.

In mom's case, they put in a pacemaker and put her on a whack of meds, mostly related to blood pressure and vaso-dialators. Hardly the end of the world, and she's turning into a fantastically feisty lady again.

I'm so glad to hear that things have improved!
