That’s tall stuff until you read some of Carver’s stories from before he met Gordon… and from after they parted ways and Tess Gallagher was editing them. There is a marked, marked difference in quality and style. The meat is still there, but the voice wavers. Some of the uncollected stories that have recently come out are dismal shades of his finest work (such as I Could See The Smallest Things and .
Food for thought when you’re hitting the bottle… maybe Ray Carver isn’t even Ray Carver, eh?
