Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, yet plagurism is frowned upon.

Don’t think of it as stealing, simply say that it was “inspired by a story by Scott from my class”. You can get away with murder that way.

should we assume that any email we might send your way is also prone to this stealer that lurks in your heart? yikes! from now on, i’m typing everything to you with only my left hand. this distraction alone should keep my one good idea safely in my head.

Take it anyway. Just publish it here where we can read it. It’s not like no one ever wrote a story about a blind date before. Well… there was that one movie… um. What was it called?? Damn. It’ll come to me later.

I digress. Just don’t publish it in front of the class.

It’s funny you should say this, because I just sent off my first bit of competition writing knowing that at one time there was a problem with someone in the organization who was pilfering the ideas of young writers and using them him/herself. Clearly this is a violation. Your concern, though, I wouldn’t worry about too much. Unless you plan to steal the “twist”, you can’t feel guilty because someone placed an idea in front of you that you find appealing. Chances are, the second you started writing it would become something else entirely anyhow. I know what you mean, though. I did that a lot in class, too. I wanted to help them along in what I thought was only an obvious direction. Eventually I did learn to let go, and used it as inpsiration to edit my own work more closely.

Glad you’re still lovin’ it. I’m so proud of you! 🙂
