Reading your stuff out loud is HUGELY helpful. I just wrote a column on it for Fiction Forum. If you're reading it to people you know, though, make sure they understand what it means to be a strategic reader. You can give someone constructive criticism without breaking their spirit.

Bottom line, it's one of the Four Agreements -- Don' t Take Anything Personally. That means the good or the bad. Just be true to yourself. If there's one thing you know, it's how a loyal readership will adapt to YOUR storytelling. Don't shy from that.

from one writer to another, if you ever want to story swap, we could lend each other a hand. i'm taking a creative writing course myself this summer.

also, try reading the book "writing down the bones" by natalie goldberg (i think that's her name). an excellent motivator.

take care and best of luck!
